Outline







 Brief outline of the project with specific technology fall-outs

The society at large is characterized by the following with reference to cyber security
  • Generally, many private enterprises including small and medium scale industry, public entities, and home users lack the resources to adequately manage cyber security risk.
  • Although the Internet has increased communication and productivity has provided businesses with access to new markets, it has also given hackers, thieves, disgruntled employees, fraudsters, and other criminals new opportunities to cause economic and social damage on a broader scale and has created new potential weapons of terrorism, more quickly than ever before.
  • Internet users must be made aware of the importance of sound cyber security practices and given more user-friendly tools to implement them
  • A large number of entrepreneurs and home users are not aware of how their individual cyber security preparedness affects security overall
Due to the above, there is a need to launch awareness campaign through print and electronic media to educate on information security practices among the various sections of public including housewives, students of schools, colleges and universities and industry including SME sectors and non IT organizations. The following activities can be done for the creation of information security awareness among the stakeholders:
  1. Conducting awareness programs i.e workshops and seminars for the public
  2. Developing security guide book for preparedness of the cyber security
  3. Support, promote, and launch a national public service campaign on cyber security through print and electronic media
  4. Develop an open source cyber security tool kit for home users, school children and housewives
  5. Partner with education groups, school boards, superintendents, teachers, and colleges and universities to develop and distribute materials to school children and institutions of higher education that raise awareness of appropriate cyber security behavior
  6. Provide cyber security and ethics curricula and explore opportunities for introducing awareness content as part of courses and Implementing Hotline or Help line through Web Portal.
As part of the programme, we need to asses/evaluate the creation of information security awareness among school children, housewives, small offices, computer and network users etc and awareness among the stakeholders. This activity would include a study to be carried out to measure the awareness levels, the levels of information security practices and knowledge reaching level of information security among various stakeholders. There is need to carry out a periodic study of
  • Information Security best practices among the various stakeholders
  • Awareness levels of various stake holders
  • Understanding levels of security tools and materials
  • Ground realities of cyber security awareness
To do the same, it is proposed to carry out four studies during this period of project so that output of the reports could be used for steering the further activities in information security awareness.
