Information Security Awareness Workshop

Government of India and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) organized a Workshop on Information Security Awareness on 3 September 2010 at CII Northern Region Headquarters, Sector 31-A, Chandigarh. 

Mr Nitin Peshawaria, Chairman, CII Chandigarh Council in his address stressed, “In the present day scenario information and information systems have become an essential aspect of any business. It has graduated from facilitator and information provider to that of effective decision making ability and help in improving efficiency. Growing dependence of most organizations on their information systems has provided problems such as theft of data, attacks using malicious code, denial of service etc. Security awareness is knowledge of potential threats.”

Mr Kuljit Singh Parmar, Design Engineer, C-DAC Mohali in his detailed presentation discussed how to protect one’s computer from Malware like virus / worm / Trojan / spyware using operating system updates, antivirus software, antispyware technology and desktop firewall. Mr Parmar also discussed how to protect oneself from spam, phishing scam abd identity theft.

Mr Shekhar Kapoor, Finacle Consulting & Products Strategy (CAPS), Infosys Technologies Ltd made a presentation on Cyber Security – Risks to Business at the Workshop. . Mr Kapoor deliberated upon the various cyber threats that could risk business dealings like cyber attacks – sources & motives, list of cyber attacks, malware & symptoms of malware, phishing, pharming, social engineering, encryption, digital certificate and protective strategy – using antivirus, antimalware & firewall.

The workshop was well attended by 70 participants from small and medium enterprises from the Chandigarh Region who found the workshop very informative.
