Pondicherry Engineering College being a participating Institute, conducted Information Security Awareness workshop as a National campaign to School Children and Faculty on 15th October 2009 at Hotel Ram International, Puducherry. 40 schools has participated in this program. 114 students and 25 staffs have participated in this program. The following is the report of the workshop.
Mr. S. Elangovan, Assistant Station Engineer, All India Radio, Puducherry has given the felicitation address and distributed the certificates. The message he addressed the gathering is Internet usage in internet parlors is very much unsafe. Most of the information available in the internet is considered as useless and only a small amount is useful for us. Operating systems such as Windows XP are much prone to security when compared with the other OS. Avoid storing personal and important information in the computer systems of internet parlors. We can use three mail ID’s for our various purposes namely general, personal and official. Most of the free wares available in the internet is highly dangerous in installing in our own computer system because it is not that much easy to uninstall it. And also avoid using pen drives in untrusted systems. Sites such as torrent is not secure to use because when we access the site, there is possible of more than 10 persons accessing our computer and steal the data. Dr. V. Prithiviraj, Principal, Pondicherry Engineering College and Dr. N. Sreenath, Professor and Head, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Pondicherry Engineering College has presided over the function. Dr. V. Prithiviraj addressed the gathering. He addressed the importance of Internet. Student need to know about the measures used to secure the information termed as the killer application of second generation mobile phones. Security professionals now concentrating on content development that includes VOIP, Multimedia etc. Computer network of schools Should be protected from intruders wireless environment the future developing technology is very much vulnerable under communication and information technology department information security department is now conducting several workshop on creating awareness of information security among students to make the state Pondicherry ,a protected environment.
Mr. A. Amuthan, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Pondicherry Engineering College and coordinator of this program has compiled the whole Program. The registration started at 9.00 A. M. followed by the workshop. Mr. A. Amuthan, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE gave the lecture on Advantages of Internet, Risk factors on Internet, What is Spyware and how to remove it. How to remove viruses, worms and temporary files from the system. Mr. N. Sivakumar, Lecturer, Department of CSE gave the lecture on Search engine, Software Updates (Patches), Phishing. Dr. D. Loganathan, Professor, Department of CSE gave the lecture on the Password protection.
