National Awareness Campaign on Information Security

for : Workshop on Information Security Awareness

NASSCOM, who was a member Inter-Ministerial Working group, presented a report to the working group (source IDC) in which it was indicated that there would be a requirement of about 77400 Information Security Professionals in INDIA by 2008.  Considering the need and growing importance of the Information Security, Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, Government of India has formulated and initiated the Information Security Education and Awareness (ISEA) Programme. The main objective of this programme is to create Information Security Awareness to amongst students, teachers and parents. This prestigious programme is being implemented by the Pondicherry Engineering College, Puducherry. Around 30 Institutions like IIITs, NITs, DOEACC and Universities across the country are participating in this initiative. Based on the expertise of C-DAC, Hyderabad it was given the unique responsibility of executing the National Campaign of creating Information Security Awareness by DIT, Government of India. Under this programme, Pondicherry Engineering College, Puducherry organizing programs, workshops for creating awareness for School Children and Teachers. 7 schools (Kendriya Vidyalaya, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Jeevanandam GHSS, V.O.C. GHSS, Navalar Nedunchezhiyan GHSS, GHSS, Oulgaret, Thanthai Periyar GGHSS) have participated in this program. 127 participants have participated including students and staffs have participated in this program.   A dedicated website www.infosecawareness.in  has been created for this purpose.

Mr. B. Srikanth, Senior Superintendent of Police Puducherry inaugurated the function. The information termed to be a secret one only because of its value. Because of rapid growth of internet users, events like information disclosure, deletion and some other attacks are possible. Bad users spread malicious codes, virus through internet, and we need to know how to safeguard the system and the methods to restore it. Duplication of credit cards, cracking barcodes are likely happening nowadays. Cyber criminals involved in cybercrimes cause harm to the society and culture. Recovery software’s are available to get back the deleted information. Dr. V. Prithiviraj, Principal, Pondicherry Engineering College and Dr. N. Sreenath, Professor and Head, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Pondicherry Engineering College has presided over the function. Dr. V. Prithiviraj addressed the gathering. This is an excellent opportunity for school children to know about information security and its needs. In Kerala, school children are working in Linux environment in computers and I like our students also to follow the same. Students from various schools participated in this event. I want you all to educate your friends also. It is a necessity to educate school children with information security and its awareness because of the rapid growth of internet users.

Mr. A. Amuthan, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Pondicherry Engineering College and coordinator of this program has compiled the whole Program. The registration started at 9.00 A. M. followed by the workshop. Mr. A. Amuthan, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE gave the lecture on Cyber bulling and downloads. Mr. N. Sivakumar, Lecturer, Department of CSE gave the lecture on Internet Communication, Social Networking. A Quiz program was conducted for all the students in the form written test. Three students were awarded the prize. Followed by we have a question hour session. In the validation function the prizes and certificates were distributed.
