February 28th :

Be suspicious if someone contacts you unexpectedly and ask for your personal information. Most legitimate companies do not operate that way.

Asking personal information through phone is not followed by any legitimate company. Also its not a best practice to do so, thus act smart and be cautios on such phone calls or emails.

February 27th :

Anyone can post data on internet. Beware of fraudulent information

The World wide web have become as deeply in our culture as the telephone and Personal computer.Be careful what you post on websites like Facebook - don't post your birth date or other personal information that can be used to verify your identity. Don't open the  unfamiliar e-mails. Parents and schools should ensure children are informed about computer schemes and supervise their activities online as much as possible.


February 26th :

Always use spam filters in e-mail

E-mail nowadays is a security hazard. Many viruses and worms use e-mail to spread themselves throughout the Internet, and almost every day new types of worms and viruses appear. By using the spam filter in our emails, It have come on the scene to combat the flow of unwanted email.

February 25th :

Never click links in e-mail which starts with IP address

Never click links in e-mails that starts with IP address, always be suspicious if an e-mail tells you to go to an IP address instead of a Website name. Each and every name which you type in URL is associated with an IP number. But some IP numbers might not be associated with names. So check your e-mails carefully while opening. These links lead to fraudulent Websites that may look like legitimate Web sites and ask for personal information. Never provide any personal information to these links. Sometimes these links may contain viruses, worms, Trojan horses …which runs backside and spoil your system completely.

February 24th :

Never open/reply/forward suspicious e-mails:

There are a lot of viruses, malware, worms, spam messages on the internet. So whenever you get mails from unknown persons never open or reply or forward them as they may contain any of the above mentioned programs which damage our systems and spams, which create unnecessary traffic on the internet.

February 23rd :

Always be careful about fraudulent /phishing mails

Do not respond to phishing mails/fraudulent .when you respond to phishing/fraudulent emails with personal data you are about to robbed, some one will use your personal information for thing to purchase online so the best way to avoid phishing e-mails is set some basic ground rules, realize that despite what ever security measures you install on your computer you will receive phishing/fraudulent emails. So best policy you can do is never communicate personal information in an email or to any unknown person through online.

February 22nd :

Never accept e-mail which do not contain/mention your name

Never accept or open if you see e-mail with the name you never heard or that don’t contain name with an attached file then, you will be in risk if you open such e-mails.

February 21st :

Never send your photograph through e-mail for unknown persons.

The secured mail sites are often used for sensitive information like payment transaction and corporate information and also in other application where data need to be secure. Use HTTPS websites instead of HTTP. In the web address it replaces "http" to "https". The https refers to the hypertext transfer protocol secure.

February 20th :

Never Use Others e-mail to send Your Messages.

Never send photograph of family, yourself and friends through e-mail or to anyone you meet online .A person may misuse the picture by distorting, by advertising and can also obtain the details about yourselves that might not have wished to disclose so never send your photograph or allow them to circulate on the web.

Always use e-mail transaction through secured mail sites

February 18th :

Report suspicious mails to concern authorities

If you receive email requesting  for personal details like  financial information, personal identification PIN numbers, credit or debit card numbers, from unknown source and if you feel the email is false or suspicious don’t respond to it or don’t forward to others instead report to the concerned authorities and must refer to security officer. And also save offending messages and report them to cyber police. "Cyber Crime Cells in India"

February 17th :

Never open Web-links in your e-mail. Always type links in Web browser

Never open Web-links in your e-mails. Some of the fraudulent e-mails contain clever and compelling language that prompts recipients to click on links. These links lead to fraudulent Websites that may look like legitimate Web sites and ask for personal information. Never provide any information to these fraudulent Web sites. So inorder to avoid these attacks always type the web-links in Web browser.

February 16th :

Never trust the icons in the e-mail attachment. The virus file may be shown as PDF file.

Do not trust the icons of attachment files; these attachment files may contain executable files which can spread virus into your system. Don’t open any e-mail or e-mail attachments which comes from unknown persons and also do not open the e-mail attachment files with extensions SHS, VBS, PIF and also files with
double extensions NAME.TXT.XBS, NAME.BMP.EXE


February 15th :

Never Open Porno related attachments With file names PORNO.exe, Pamela_nude.exe.

Never open e-mail attachments with the file extensions PORNO.exe orPAMELA_NUDE.exe.These extensions are almost never used in normal attachments but they are frequently used by viruses and worms.Configure Windows to Show File extension.Avoid downloading files from sites that you aren't 100% sure about that File is Virus Free.Do not trust the icons of attachment file-->Worms Make fool to the User Using Pictures,Images etc.Keep your operating system and applications up-to-date and apply the latest patches when they become available.

February 14th :

Never Open attachments With double file extensions Such as info.BMP.EXE or info.TXT.VBS

Never open e-mail attachments with the file extensions VBS, SHS or PIF. These extensions are almost never used in normal attachments but they are frequently used by viruses and worms.Disconnect your network or modem cable when you're not using your computer - or just power it down.When possible, avoid e-mail attachments both when sending and receiving e-mail.Avoid attachments with sexual filenames. E-mail worms often use attachments with names like PORNO.EXE or PAMELA_NUDE.VBS to lure users into executing them.Never open files,images,video,documents with Double Extension,Because These files have viruses. Do not share your folders with other users unless necessary. If you do, make sure you do not share your full drive or your Windows directory.

Don't advertise that you are away from home


Some email accounts, especially within an organization, offer a feature (called an autoresponder) that allows you to create an "away" message if you are going to be away from your email for an extended period of time. The message is automatically sent to anyone who emails you while the autoresponder is enabled. While this is a helpful feature for letting your contacts know that you will not be able to respond right away, be careful how you phrase your message. You do not want to let potential attackers know that you are not home, or, worse, give specific details about your location and itinerary. Safer options include phrases such as "I will not have access to email between [date] and [date]." If possible, also restrict the recipients of the message to people within your organization or in your address book. If your away message replies to spam, it only confirms that your email account is active. This may increase the amount of spam you receive

Configure Operating System/Browser to always Show file extensions

Today, web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari (to name a few), are installed on almost all computers. Because web browsers are used so frequently, it is vital to configure them securely.There is an increasing threat from software attacks that take advantage of vulnerable web browsers. This problem is made worse by a number of factors, including the following: Web page addresses can be disguised or take you to an unexpected siteMany web browsers are configured to provide increased functionality at the cost of decreased security.Many users do not know how to configure their web browsers securelyMany users are unwilling to enable or disable functionality as required to secure their web browserMany web browsers are configured to provide increased functionality at the cost of decreased security.

February 11th :

Never Open E-Mail attachments With the file extensions Such as VBS,SHS,PIF etc

In general, keep your operating system and applications up-to-date and apply the latest patches when they become available. Be sure to get the updates directly from the vendor.
  • When possible, avoid e-mail attachments both when sending and receiving e-mail
  • Configure Windows to always show file extensions. In Windows 2000, this is done through Explorer via the Tools menu: Tools/Folder Options/View - and uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types". This makes it more difficult to for a harmful file (such as an EXE or VBS) to masquerade as a harmless file (such as TXT or JPG).
  • Never open e-mail attachments with the file extensions VBS, SHS or PIF. These extensions are almost never used in normal attachments but they are frequently used by viruses and worms.

February 10th :

Never forward online – chain messages through e-mail to everyone you know

The online-chain message is a message which comes through e-mail attachments that is sent to several persons with a request that each recipient should send multiple copies to a number of persons whom you know.

So that the circulation may increase exponentially. This is a trick to spread the virus or spam through e- mails. They trap the people by sending the messages like “Making money fast”, “virus alerts”, sending sympathy messages like “A child is suffering from brain tumor, if you donate some money for operation the child will be rescued” and some of the threats like “something bad will happen if you break the chain”.


February 09th :

Educate yourself on best practices, guidelines on internet usage

Change your password periodically and do not download from the unknown site which spreads the virus upon downloading. Avoid the strangers during chating and do not click on the suspicious links which appears during the browsing time. Always update and when  your antivirus warns against the virus, clean the virus immediately don’t avoid it or neglect it which  further causes the system to  crash  and leads to loose our sensitive data. Always check for the browser certificates. Always use virtual keyboard during internet banking transactions and change your internet banking password weakly.

February 08th :

Follow good security practices for distributing your email address

Do not give your email address to any one in the public places like cafe, hotels etc. Also don't give your email address during chating with strangers. During browsing some advertisement banners appear asking to give your email address saying that we will forward you some gifts, avoid it. And also when you visit some places like shopping mall the persons simply comes and tell to fill up the personal information along with your email address saying that we are conducting some lucky draw, avoid them.

February 07th :

Follow the best practices of Internet browsers

For secure browsing , follow the best practice of internet browsers like deleting cookies after the session completes, blocking pop-ups, deleting temporary files, allowing trusted web sites, updating with latest patches.

February 06th :

Monitor your child's online activities regularly:

A recent study is done where most of the children told that they are using the internet for two to  three hours regularly at the home.  Whereas their parents told that their kids are spending time on the internet for maximum time. It's common in summer and spring season where children get long holidays. And thus this would be Danger.  So its the responsibility of the parents and teachers to come front and explain the usage of the internet like how to browse, which sites they have to open with the  prior knowledge of their parents etc. Internet is the place where the children are used to play games, watch movies, chat online and does many other things which needs proper guidelines. Also it's good related to their school projects if used utilized well. Using the right thing in right manner is important and thus its the whole  responsibility of parents and teachers to guide them in a proper way for browsing the internet sites and in a secure manner.

February 05th :

Report abuse like spam, harassement, stalking ,etc., to the concerned authorities

The major problem every one is facing now-a-days in this electronic world is the Junk mails or Spams which pour into our mail box. And the harassement and the stalking has also become a major issue with the growth of Social networking sites. Recently a college boy of Thane created a fake profile of her classmate and uploaded her photo with offensive messages without her permission. Upon her complaint, the Thane Cyber Cell (TCC) arrested the boy. He has been booked under IPC 469 (publicising offensive message) and section 67 of IT Act, 2000 and he can be punished upto 5 years.

It is advised to report to the concerned cyber crime cells in your city or atleast to the nearest police station regarding any cyber related offenses.

February 04th :

Always download e-mail attachments after scanning  with latest updated Anti-Virus

Scanning the attachments, will prevent you from downloading any content having virus. If possible configure your mail client to do thise automatically, when ever download happens.


February 03rd :

Do no disclose Sensitive Information in e-mail or on Internet

Disclosing sensitive information through e-mail or Internet, is not preferred as there may be phishing attacks happening on your system or account. which allow the attackers to get your personal data and can easily be misused by them.

Never open e-mails from unknown persons

Be wary of email from strangers. Never open an email with an attachment from a source that is unknown or suspicious. Virus containing emails can be very persuasive in the subject line. Do not let your curiosity be aroused.

Do not open e-mail attachments with double file extensions.
For example  :  filename.bmp.txt

Avoid attachments with sexual filenames. For example PORNO.exe
