Mumbai: Officials at the Mumbai police's cyber crime investigation cell (CCIC) are in a quandary. On June 23 this year, someone hacked into the email account of actor Meghna Naidu, who shot to fame with Kaliyon Ka Chaman music video, and told her contacts that she was pregnant. While sleuths have now traced the hacker to Pune, they can’t arrest him/her yet as the actor hasn’t filed a First Information Report (FIR) till date.
Meghna told TOI on Tuesday, "I was in New York and could not lodge an FIR against the hacker. I have already submitted an application to the police about my case. Officials have informed me that the hacker has been traced to Pune, but has not been arrested."
The hacker used to chat with Meghna's friends at a specific time. Some of the actor's friends got suspicious when the hacker, posing as Meghna, made vicious statements about three Bollywood actors. The hacker went on to declare that Meghna was pregnant. The friends then called up the actor, who was shocked to find out about "her" chats. "The hacker used my account to chat with my friends," Meghna said. "Three of my friends, who are not from the film industry, told me that the hacker chatted with them for well over two hours." Three other email accounts, operated by Meghna’s assistant Dale Bhagwagar, were also hacked into. "The hacker changed my password and I couldn’t access my emails," said the actor.
Following Meghna’s complaint, the police found the hacker’s Internet Protocol (IP) address through its US-based server. They then collected the details about the Internet Service providers (ISP), before concluding that the hacker was operating out of Pune. While the police are said to have completed their "technical investigation" in the case, they are waiting for Meghna to lodge an FIR. A senior crime branch official refused to divulge more information, claiming the probe was on.
